What are Muslin Squares and How Do You Use Them?

Posted by Emma weldon on

Becoming a new parent is a time filled with plenty of fun, adventure, and its fair share of surprises. However, preparing for a newborn can also feel a little overwhelming, especially when thinking about all the new things you’ll need to get them. From nappies and nurseries to clothing and feeding, the list can seem endless.

Often overlooked on that list, but essential for new mums intending to breastfeed their newborn, as well as parents who are bottle feeding their baby, are muslin squares. However, unlike some other baby essentials, many new parents and family members often have lots of questions around muslin squares - such as what they’re for, and what’s unique about them?

Our team here at Bumbles and Boo are experts in baby products, and we’re also parents to several wonderful children ourselves - meaning we’re ideally placed to help answer all of your questions on muslins. In this blog, we will explore in a little more detail on what muslin squares are, why you need them, how to use them, how many you need for a newborn, and some options for purchasing your own.

What are Muslin Squares?

Muslin squares are versatile, soft, and breathable pieces of fabric. The lightweight and airy nature of muslin squares make them perfect for a variety of uses, from breastfeeding covers to wiping up spills to swaddling your little one. They are typically square in shape (hence the name!) and come in various sizes.  They are also gentle on your baby's delicate skin, making them a must-have item for any parent.

Why Do I Need Muslin Squares?

Muslin squares are a parent's best friend for several reasons.

  • They are highly absorbent, making them ideal for cleaning up spills, possets, drool, or any other messes your baby may make.
  • Their soft and breathable nature makes the larger ones perfect as a summer blnket or while swaddling your baby, providing comfort and security.
  • Muslin squares can also be used as a breastfeeding cover / burp cloth.
  • They can double as a makeshift changing mat when you're on the go.
  • They can be used as a sunshield for the pram or car window (don't forget the suncream too).
  • Muslins are also perfect for a quick game of peek-a-boo to entertain a happy baby or distract a crying one.

How Do I Use Muslin Squares?

Using muslin squares is easy and straightforward. For cleaning up spills or messes on you or your newborn, simply dampen the muslin with water and wipe it away. For swaddling, lay a large muslin square flat on a surface, place your baby in the centre, and wrap the corners around your baby, tucking them in securely. For use as a breastfeeding cover, drape the muslin cloth over your shoulder and across your chest, providing both privacy and protection to yourself while feeding your baby.

How Many Muslin Squares Do I Need for a Newborn?

The number of muslin squares you need for a newborn depends on your personal preference and how often you plan on using them. As a general guideline, it is recommended to have at least 10-12 muslins on hand. One for each room that you will be using with the baby, a couple in the changing bag, one in the car, one kept in the pram and a few in the wash should be enough for everyday use. Having them easily to hand is extremely useful when they are suddenly needed! Some parents find that they need more than others, especially if they are using them for multiple purposes. Ultimately, the number of muslin squares you need will depend on your individual needs and lifestyle.
